Catching a taxi at an international airport without getting shafted is a bit of a fine art. To be fair, I don’t know what the deal is with the taxis who collect passengers outside the arrivals area at Istanbul airport. They may be fine. It may be that everything is on the meter and above board.

I’m wary though of taxis at airports, having been burned twice. Once was in Kazan, Russia where I took a cab who offered me a ride; he charged about one and a half the going rate as per the Yandex app.. The second time was at Almaty airport in Kazakhstan. It was 5.30 in the morning. I was exhausted and had had a horrible flight with a neighbour passenger who lacked social skills. I knew it was a bad move, but, in my tiredness, I reasoned, “if I pay 1.5 x the going rate, so be it”. On this occasion there appeared to be a misunderstanding about a zero. The sales pitch, “same price as Yandex” vanished into thin air, along with a good chunk of my money.

The result of these experiences is that I will now only ever get a taxi at an airport using Uber (in Turkey), or Yandex, (in Russia and Kazakhstan). Usually, this is not a big problem. Yandex is much better than Uber for this as it makes it much easier to pin the exact meeting spot. The worst that happens is a few grimaces and sotte voce jeering from the regular drivers as you ignore them and wait for your app. driver to arrive.

Istanbul airport, though, is in a class of its own. The main problem is, once you have decided to get an Uber, (Yandex does not seem to work at the airport), where to meet the driver? If you just go to the regular taxi rank by arrivals and order your Uber from there you will see a series of lifts appear in the app., each one with a half-life of about 3 seconds. The app. itself seems to want you to meet on the Departures level. Gemini suggests that drivers are dropping off passengers and trying to pick you up, but can’t risk waiting and so if you don’t find them instantly they move off. That sounds plausible. What you need is the insider knowledge of how Uber actually works at Istanbul airport. You may just get lucky and a driver will pick up your request who gives you the secret instructions, but you can preempt that stage. We give you the instructions here.

There is a pick up point for Uber, outside the main airport arrivals/departures zones. The reason appears to be that the police won’t allow them to pick up in the main taxi area. Follow these instructions, (valid in April 2026);

On the arrivals level locate the walkway to the Metro. It leads directly away from the terminal. Walk towards the metro. About 200 metres. At the end, turn right, and there are some lifts right there. You are on level 1. Go down to level 0 in the lift. When you emerge, more or less directly opposite you, a little to the left are some glass doors. These lead to a deserted looking service road. The Uber drivers collect from here.

The glass doors

Once there order your Uber. The app has no spot for this and won’t let you pick it by geolocation. It just defaults back to the Terminal building where you have no chance. As soon as the driver answers send them a message saying something like the below. I would recommend having this ready so you can copy and paste it.

Hi

I am at the Metro, floor 0, where Uber usually meets. By the glass doors.

You need to make them understand that you know the system and are already in the right place.

That should be it. You should now have an Uber with a predictable fare.

Of course, this only works until the traffic police decide to stop it. But, perhaps the current situation represents a status quo and modus vivendi between the Uber drivers and the regular taxi drivers outside the terminal, so it may last. Good luck!
